2017 Farewell to Kings

50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Malbec, 25% Petite Verdot

At one point in time, the wine world was ruled by Chardonnay and the evil empire that was Cabernet Sauvignon. There was so much bad Chardonnay and Cabernet, with very few alternatives. During those days I was a wine knight in punk rock armor. I believed in the underdog and railing against the establishment, making and promoting alternative reds.

Cabernet was a corrupt king, and I was part of the alternative red rebellion. But now, most of us have broadened our minds and palates. The war is over. As an olive branch, I have embraced Cabernet and its kind. I have made it in my own way (with the little bit of Punk Rock and a few broken rules), but I'm a better winemaker for the time I've spent learning to understand the enemy.

I give you “Farewell to Kings”, my Tête de Cuvée. It is a blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Malbec and 25% Petite Verdot.  Aged in 100% French Oak for 24 months. It's representative of my winemaking journey, and an homage to a favorite band that helped shape who I am and pursue my dreams. Walk the walk, enjoy the adventure.

Tasting Notes
On the Nose: Blueberry layered with red cherry and black fruit with creamy toasted oak On the Palate: Lush blueberry, boysenberry, dark cherry that flow in layers with currant and spice. The layers of red and black fruit are cascade into firm but sensuous tannic structure that catches you with the soft rich nuances of forest floor and flowing layers of bassy blueberry with hints of black pepper. The silky mouthfeel trails into a creamy oak finish with beachfire lingering smoke. This is a doorway to antiquity and visions of a better day gone by. Drink with meat on the bone and slow roasted winter stews. Keep warm and share the love.
